The storefront at 79 Beak Street, Soho, London, carries a rich history. Once home to John Wilkes, a renowned gun and rifle maker, its beautifully aged façade remained largely untouched for years. Layers of green paint, applied over time, developed into a striking patina, adding to its charm. For many years, the space housed the contemporary art gallery Riflemaker, before transitioning in 2023 into the London flagship store of Parisian fashion label Officine Générale. While the building has been repainted in a slightly darker shade of green, the original John Wilkes signage remains, preserving its historical essence. Notably, the celebrated painter Canaletto lived just down the street at 41 Beak Street from 1749 to 1752, adding another layer of artistic heritage to this historic Soho location
The painter Canaletto lived for three years at number 41 Beak Street (1749-1752).
