Lovely mixed media assemblage by renown Welsh modern artist Islwyn Watkins (1938-2018). Watkins was a printmaker, teacher, constructionist, and events artist. He studied at Cardiff College of Art from 1954-59 and then taught in Hertfordshire and Leeds before before studying and teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1965-66. Following his time in Wisconsin, Watkins returned to Wales where he had a long and illustrious career as an artist specializing in the use of found objects for whimsical assemblages.
This assemblage stems from his time at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1966. It is in good vintage condition with one crack in the wood and some minor separation at the corner of the frame due to all pieces being found. It presents beautifully and adds wonderful texture and color to any room. This piece was obtained from another Madison artist who was friends with Islwyn in the 1960s.
