The Romantic landscape subject, featuring the towering waterfall at Devil’s Bridge in Cardiganshire, draws on Rev William Gilpin's aesthetic principles of the picturesque, exquisitely placed between the 'sublime' and the 'beautiful'.This painting formed part of a series commissioned in 1832 by Catherine Johnstone née Brome (1775–1833), who was married to William Johnstone, Vicar of Culmington, Ludlow.On pale green paper laid down on backing paper.All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and—if it is a collection artwork—its accompanying collection text or artist biography.
