The resulting herringbone and chequer patterns echo traditional bamboo craftsmanship while offering the durability and gentle sheen of lacquer.

Each bowl is finished with a deep reddish-brown exterior and a contrasting glossy black interior, creating an elegant visual interplay when the lids are removed at the dining table. The lids are moulded like miniature thatched roofs, reinforcing the rustic basket motif while providing a comfortable grip.

The set is housed in its original wooden storage box, bearing the hand-brushed inscription “basket-ground lacquer soup bowls, one set of five.” Old paper labels on the lid record a previous owner in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, adding a touch of provenance.
