An 18th century, pine, handcarved, cheese-pressing table—in such wonderful condition, with a gorgeous patina! These tables were historically used in cheese production, particularly for “pressing” cheese and allowing the whey to drain, as indicated by the carved out top and its long-throated drainage channel.
Many of these tables have not lasted the test of time, as they were made by joining two pieces of wood with dowels or metal rods to join them together…gradually, with moisture and time, the two pieces fell apart from each other and rotted. However, the ingenious person that made this cheese-pressing table, used one log and carved it out, so that there would be no worries of it ever splitting into two pieces—ingenious! See less
