Dale William Nichols (American, 1904-1995) paint and rubbing on linen fabric mounted to board features a figural Mayan king, chieftain, or priest in ceremonial head dress. Signed and dated 1973 lower right. Presented in a custom wooden frame.
Nichols born in the small rural town of David City, Nebraska. He grew up on a farm and only began to pursue his interest in art during high school. At the age of twenty, Nichols moved to Illinois to study at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He also studied in Vienna, Austria for a while. Nichols is best known for his unique paintings of midwestern rural and farm life. He was also a teacher and was named the Carnegie Professor of Art at the University of Illinois in 1939. Around the same time, his painting "The Cold Wave" won the Watson F. Blair prize from the Art Institute of Chicago. Throughout the 1940s, Nichols painted covers for several magazines including The Saturday Evening Post. In 1948, Nichols moved to Tubac, Arizona. He established the Artist’s School in Tubac and painted there for six years while reestablishing the town as an artist’s colony. During his later years, Nichols spent his time traveling; he lived in Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Guatemala and Alaska, often incorporating the regional cultures and landscapes of each location into his painting style. When Nichols traveled to Guatemala in the 1960s, he was inspired by Spanish and Mayan culture thus incorporating these interests and themes into his art. The item featured here is an example of this work, characterized by Nichols's interpretation of rubbings from Mayan temple symbols.
Dale Nichols's work can be found in museums in major cities of the United States and around the world.
