“Bilbao Estuary,” Julio Pérez Torres, Contemporary Art, 1960s – Bilbao, Spain
Exceptional coastal landscape painting titled “Bilbao Estuary,” by Julio Pérez Torres (Madrid, 1901–2001), a renowned Spanish painter specializing in landscapes, especially coastal areas, active throughout most of the 20th century. He was a highly prolific artist and worked primarily in oil on canvas, depicting landscapes (ports, estuaries, views of cities such as Toledo, Bilbao, and Segovia), although he also stood out with his still life paintings.
His work continues to be appreciated in the current 20th-century Spanish art market, especially among collectors of coastal and urban landscapes. He was not part of the avant-garde movement, remaining within an accessible figurative style of painting that combines tradition with the evocation of recognizable and nostalgic environments.
The spirit of this painting is the great mastery of the landscape rendered using broad brushstrokes without prior drawing. His brushwork tends to be loose and evocative, with a realistic approach, albeit tinged with a nostalgic and classic air, highlighting his attention to the coastal environment. It is a reimagined representation of nature, translated into a sensibility saturated with lyricism. It can be noted that the artist, in general, stands out for his sober technique, which manages to capture tranquil and sometimes melancholic atmospheres.
