The unique piece by Micheal Taylor for Baker is incredibly functional and would be ideal in a small apartment where style and function need to co-exist. The top of this Asian style altar table actually folds open to double in size. It can be used as a console table but expanded when needed for a small dinner party.
This piece is extremely well made but the oxblood colored lacquer top could use refinishing. We hesitated doing it - so the new owners could choose a color that fit their decor. This piece has survived 75 years and it will look timeless for another 75 years.
Found in Baker Far East Catalog, page 14, console 7-2412.
We are including 2 X-base stools that the original owners tucked under the console table. They are in the style of Billy Baldwin. The fabric is a nubby oxblood. It is still in decent shape but would benefit from cleaning (or reupholstering to match your decor). The dimensions on the stools is 22"W X 17"D x 18"H.
Michael Taylor (1927–1986) was an American interior and furniture designer best known for creating the influential "California Look." This style emphasized light, airiness, and a prominent use of natural forms.
His designs frequently featured boldly overscaled furniture and a mix of casual pieces with formal antiques, creating a look that was both rustic and glamorous, yet uncluttered and comfortable.
He was recognized as one of Architectural Digest's "20 Greatest Designers of All Time" and an "Interior Design Legend." The Far East Collection he designed for Baker Furniture was wildly popular when it was released and the pieces still look incredibly timeless today.
