This exceptional antique Spanish armoire is a striking example of Renaissance Revival craftsmanship, richly detailed with hand-carved religious iconography and original polychrome (painted) decoration.
Made from solid oak and pine, this one-of-a-kind piece commands presence and reverence, embodying both artistic and spiritual grandeur.
Front Panel
The central door features a full-length carved depiction of Saint Michael the Archangel, sword in hand, draped in flowing robes, and painted in richly layered tones. He stands beneath an arched niche, flanked by two deeply fluted Corinthian columns carved and painted to resemble ancient temple pillars. Above the arch, two carved cherubs look downward toward the Archangel, adding a celestial touch to the piece’s iconography.
Side Panels
The left and right sides are adorned with a serpentine vine motif, symbolizing the soul’s ascent or descent—depending on one’s alignment with the spiritual path represented by the Archangel. At the heart of the vine lies a trinity of carved flowers, evoking balance, purity, and sacred unity.
Base and Construction
The cabinet rests on four substantial block feet, cleverly designed and spaced to give the illusion that the entire structure floats just above the ground. All ironwork—hinges, handles, and locks—are original and hand-forged, demonstrating the artisanal integrity of the era.
