This substantial vintage Chinese carving depicts Shou Lao, the Daoist deity of longevity, holding a sacred peach of immortality while a joyful child stands beside him—a classic symbol of long life, blessings, and harmonious lineage.
Carved from richly veined Shoushan stone, this sculpture glows with warm tones of ochre, russet, and soft coral, beautifully layered throughout the figure and base. A dramatic canopy of pierced lingzhi mushrooms (symbols of spiritual strength and eternal life) crowns the top, adding striking dimensionality and symbolic weight.
The piece is carved in the round and offers visual interest from every angle, showcasing the artistry of traditional stone carving in China.
Acquired from a woman whose grandmother originally purchased it decades ago, this piece likely dates to the mid-20th century or earlier.
