A magnificent and rare antique Islamic solid bronze dowry chest, masterfully handcrafted during the late Ottoman period (19th century), likely originating from the Syrian region.
This impressive chest is entirely constructed from hand-forged, non-magnetic solid metal panels — likely a bronze or tinned copper alloy — with no internal wood structure. Each panel is intricately pierced with Arabic calligraphy and engraved with floral and foliate motifs, celebrating traditional Islamic artistry.
The Arabic inscriptions include meaningful references to "Glory" (المجد), "Praise be to God" (الحمد لله), and sacred locations such as "Jerusalem" (القدس) and "Yemen" (اليمن). These elements enhance the chest’s cultural depth, connecting it to historical values of honor, gratitude, and pilgrimage.
The chest retains its original aged patina, with mellow bronze and copper tones and oxidized surfaces speaking to over a century of history. It rests on five hand-forged conical feet, and retains its original riveted construction throughout.
The original bottom panel remains present but is currently unattached — it fits correctly into the frame and features original hand-hammered feet.
This detached bottom is consistent with authentic hand-forged Islamic metalwork from the period and does not affect the chest’s structural stability when displayed.
Provenance:
From the estate of a distinguished professor of Islamic Studies. Based on stylistic features, construction, and inscriptions, the chest likely originates from Syria or the broader Middle Eastern region. For listing purposes, the country of origin is designated as Egypt to comply with platform requirements.
Today, it serves as a rare statement piece for collectors of Islamic art, Moorish antiques, or museum-quality artifacts.
