Measuring an impressive ten feet wide and nearly eight feet tall, this antique European cabinet was likely originally made for a pharmacy, apothecary, mercantile shop, or similar commercial interior, where its extensive storage would have been used to organize and display a wide variety of goods.

The lower cabinet features an extraordinary bank of individual drawers fitted with simple metal pulls, flanked by larger paneled storage cupboards. Above, tall glass-fronted cabinets with interior shelving provide generous display space while preserving the wonderfully architectural character of the piece.

More than a century of use has given the wood a rich, warm patina, with variations in tone, old marks, wear and other imperfections that speak to its working history. Rather than feeling precious, the cabinet retains the honest, utilitarian character that makes antique European shop furniture so compelling.

At 120 inches wide, the cabinet has the presence of built-in architectural millwork while retaining the character of a freestanding antique. Importantly, the cabinet is constructed in three separate sections that come apart for transport and installation. The three sections are being sold together as one complete cabinet. This sectional construction makes the piece considerably more practical to move and install than its monumental scale might suggest.

Its unusually shallow 16-inch depth also makes its enormous scale surprisingly versatile. Today, it would make an exceptional statement piece in a kitchen or butler's pantry for storing tableware, linens and pantry goods; in a dining room as an oversized china and display cabinet; in a library or study; or in a design studio, boutique, restaurant or other commercial interior.
