The "Costes" chair was used by Starck in 1981 to furnish the famous Café Costes, located on Place des Innocents in the first arrondissement of Paris, and was characterized by the use of highly functional, durable models and simple materials. Starck designed it with a tripod base to prevent it from becoming too bulky and hindering the movement of waiters. The wider armchair, based on the tripod design of the Costes chair, was created the following year for French President Mitterrand's office at the Élysée Palace, a project to which Starck owes much of his popularity.,A series of Costes chairs designed by the well-known French designer Philippe Starck (1949-).
