Stanhope fought extensively in Europe during the Peninsular War and was one of fewer than thirty survivors out of 400 at the Battle of Waterloo. The drawing shows a view towards Heidelberg on the Neckar River in southwestern Germany, a view also sketched by J.M.W. Turner.The signature accompanying Stanhope's sketches (pictured for information only) matches that on a hand-signed engraving of Stanhope in the National Portrait Gallery (NPG D20616). The sketches were in the collection of Stanhope's son, James Banks Stanhope (1821–1904)—see photo of bookplate.On cream paper.All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and—if it is a collection artwork—its accompanying collection text or artist biography.
