Colorful small study of mother and child gleb savinov (kharkiv prov., ukraine 1915 – st. Petersburg 2000) gleb alexandrovich savinov, unanimously considered one of the main representatives of the leningrad school of painting, was born in ukraine and spent part of his childhood in saratov. His father, alexander ivanovich savinov (1881-1942), a talented painter, draftsman and teacher, was a professor at the academy of fine arts. In 1922 the family moved from saratov to petrograd. From 1928 to 1930 savinov worked in his father’s studio while still attending school. In 1934, after graduating from school, he enrolled at the leningrad academy, where he studied with alexander osmerkin. In 1940 he graduated and married his classmate and artist olga bogaevskaja: this happy family and creative union lasted sixty years. Since 1940, gleb savinov has participated in numerous exhibitions, displaying portraits, historical and genre paintings, landscapes, interior scenes and still lifes. He served during the great war and in 1944 became a member of the union of soviet artists. From 1945 to 1947, savinov taught at the repin institute and from 1949 to 1979 at the vera mukhina institute, where he has been a professor of painting since 1969. In 1973, he was awarded the title of emeritus artist of the ussr. He has participated in numerous prestigious exhibitions throughout his career, in russia and abroad. Gleb savinov belongs to the generation of artists whose destinies coincided with the historical events that shook russia in the 20th century and by which, humanly and professionally, they were inevitably marked. Having entered the academy in 1934, he trained on classical russian and european works, but immediately developed and managed to maintain over time a personal and original view of the world. Filtered through savinov’s pictorial eye, apparently banal subjects become unique, everyday moments appear rare, the ordinary is extraordinary and in fact, despite being a polythematic artist, the genre in which he demonstrates an exceptional ability to fully represent life is paradoxically the so-called “small genre”: scenes of family life and interiors that underline savinov’s gift of knowing how to find beauty in simple and everyday things. Obviously, the landscapes are no less, delicate en plein air, often with figures so harmoniously inserted into the context as to increase their lyricism. The style is clean, plain and elegant.
