De Wilde is best known for being the leading painter of theatrical portraits between 1770 and 1820. The character in this graphite sketch resembles a drawing by De Wilde of Ben in Congreve's Restoration drama 'Love for Love', engraved by James Bromley (V&A no. S.1298-2012). Whilst this may not be the same character, it certainly has a similar element of theatricality.Provenance: from the Collection of Dr E.M. Brett of Hampstead; William Drummond, Bury Street Gallery, St James's, London. On watermarked laid paper. There is a partial graphite sketch on the verso. This is one of three works by De Wilde that we have for sale, one of which is signed (see JR-639).All artworks come with a Certificate of Authenticity and in some cases an accompanying text or artist biography. Signed: No. Height: 10.4cm (4.1″) Width: 7.4cm (2.9″) Condition: Age toning and marks as shown. Thinning to the paper at the upper edge due to abrasions on the verso. There is a tiny nick at the lower right edge of the paper. There are historic adhesive marks to the verso, from previous mounting. Please see photos for detail. Presented: Unframed. See less
