Antique Lacquered Chinese Elm Wood Teapot Container Or Caddy
An exceptional Qing Dynasty hand-carved, red painted and lacquered elm wood teapot container with elaborate gilt carvings on the handle and bucket. Two solid bronze bands bind the hexagonal sides of the container.
The container was designed to carry a hot teapot with its spout protruding from the small front opening. The horizontal bar on the container’s handle locks the lid in place. Once secured, a steaming pot of tea could be carried from a remote 19th century kitchen to be served elsewhere in the house. The container also provided insulation to hold the heat longer. The container is unlocked by lifting a small peg, which allows the horizontal bar to slide out of niches carved into the flanges along the rim of the container.
This is a great decorative piece with a lovey patina.
