Item description:
a stunning sculpture depicting the bust of an elderly woman wearing a bonnet decorated with incised flowers, signed under the base with a relief shield and catalog number, marked michael andersen & sons, made in denmark in the early decades of the 1900s. Michael andersen boasts numerous auction results and his ceramics and lamps are offered online at rather high prices. We have found several sculptures similar to ours for sale online, but they are much younger, and the decorations are nothing like those on our bust, as are the craquelure and patina. This is definitely a very old piece made by the artist and not like the later ones reproduced by the manufacturer over time.
final considerations on the object:
the artistic quality of the object is very high. Note the beauty and expressiveness of the face, with prominent cheeks and cheekbones, a face full of wrinkles marked by the passage of time, a pronounced nose, and deep, expressive eyes. The floral decorations on the edge of the headdress, incised in different colors of ceramic, are beautiful. Finally, the two bows finished in ruby metallic lustre are extremely beautiful, as is the particular glazing of the woman's dress in the famous "persia" glaze, invented by michael andersen, which distinguishes all the sculptures of this manufacturer.
information about artist and/or manufacturer:
jens michael andersen (1859-1931) founded michael andersen and sons pottery (mas) in 1880 on the island of bornholm, denmark, one of the major centers of danish ceramics production between the 19th and 20th centuries. Jens trained artistically at the local hjorth pottery and is particularly known for creating the "persia" glaze, which won the gold medal at the 1935 world's fair in brussels. The "persia" glaze imitates the effect of a mosaic and gives the object its own unique character. This glaze was used on many models until the 1960s and was mainly used by marianne starck, one of the leading figures in the factory.
