Pair of karl hagenauer wiener werkstätte gilt brass candelabras, 1930
this is a true collector's item for design enthusiasts at the forefront of the design innovation of his time!
fusing the style of the art deco period with a futuristic vision that would become midcentury modern, karl hagenauer successfully realized his prophetic vision of design! first exhibited at the milan triennale in 1930, this pair of candelabras, known as "baum" (german for "tree"), earned him the gold medal, and rightly so! its success was such that it was offered on request only. A version of this candelabra is also available in a silver-plated nickel finish.
its carefully welded tubular design is only possible thanks to sophisticated welders and bronzesmiths with meticulous attention to detail! the thinness of the walls and their polishing reveal no flaws or excesses, leaving only a minimalist and essential structure of the so-called "baum/tree."
imagine the surprise and amazement on the faces of visitors to the salon in 1930, a pivotal period in europe between the political crisis and the roaring twenties, when artists revealed their genius and wildest design desires. Seeing such a refined and minimalist work of its time was genius\. Or madness. This four-armed folly supports four flat, round bobeches, ready to hold candles, but their design alone is sufficient as an object of art, a pleasure for the eyes.
now restored, they have regained their former glory. Minimal wear remains, but their polish and condition are perfect for collectors.
