Charming and expressive Tanuki figure from the 1970s, crafted from traditional Shigaraki ware, one of Japan’s most respected ceramic traditions.
Dimensions: Height 31 cm, width 20 cm, depth 16 cm. In good condition.
Made from coarse, fire-resistant clay native to the Shigaraki region, this figure dates to the Shōwa period and embodies the rich spirit of Japanese folklore.
The Tanuki, or Japanese raccoon dog, is a symbol of luck, prosperity, and hospitality. with its round belly, straw hat, sake bottle, and money pouch, it brings a playful yet meaningful presence to any interior or garden space.
Tanuki statues are often placed at entrances to homes, shops, or restaurants to attract good fortune and protection. As part of the yokai (supernatural beings), the Tanuki is known for shapeshifting, humor, and magical charm.
