Carl Friedrich Kappstein studied painting at the Academy of Arts (Berlin) under Paul Friedrich Meyerheim from 1886. Kappstein's work was also influenced by the works of his friend Karl Hagemeister.

In 1893 and 1894, Kappstein visited Italy and Sicily.

from 1905, Kappstein taught lithography at the Royal Technical University of Charlottenburg. His Handbook of Artistic Lithography was published in 1910.

Carl Friedrich Kappstein primarily painted animals, but also landscapes and still lifes. In 1904, he was awarded a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition.
