This exceptional antique Chinese bronze censer is a rare, temple-used original, richly detailed and spiritually resonant. Acquired over 30 years ago from a famous working temple in China, the piece had already seen many decades of ceremonial incense use and remains untouched by restoration — a genuine artifact of spiritual heritage, not a later reproduction.
Cast from heavy, non-magnetic bronze, the censer rests on three clawed feet and features dramatic high-relief dragons spiraling across its surface — from cloud-wrapped bodies along the lid and handles to scaled limbs gripping thick bronze rings. Finely sculpted details, including expressive eyes and claws, appear to have been hand-finished after casting, enhancing the lifelike depth and artistry.
The pierced lid is crowned with a striking green jade orb, held aloft by curled dragon talons. Known as the “dragon pearl,” the orb symbolizes prosperity, wisdom, and cosmic energy. Beneath, a swirling cloud motif and openwork carvings allow incense smoke to drift upward in ritualistic elegance.
A four-character Chinese seal mark is cast on the underside — likely apocryphal, as is common with ceremonial temple pieces, but a charming historical detail.
Monumental in symbolism yet compact in scale, this piece brings both sculptural impact and spiritual meaning to altars, consoles, or collector shelves.
Photos 1–3 show the full form of the censer and lid. Images 4–8 highlight the jade orb finial and pierced lid with swirling dragons. Photos 9–12 show the detailed underside, cast markings, and interior. The final images offer close-ups of key textures and relief work.
