This powerful original oil painting by Helen Ritchie, titled Flood Haters, is a masterful narrative composition that captures the urgency and emotional intensity of a flood scene. Measuring 24 x 18 inches and housed in an elegant gilt wood frame (30.25 x 24.5 inches), the painting is a striking example of Ritchie's ability to blend dynamic brushwork with storytelling.
Flood Haters conveys a dramatic moment as figures and animals confront the elemental force of floodwaters, evoking themes of resistance, survival, and the fragile relationship between humans and nature. The composition is rendered in vivid tones and expressive strokes, emphasizing movement, energy, and emotion. The gilt frame adds a refined, classical touch, enhancing the visual weight and impact of the piece.
This work is an exceptional example of Ritchie’s ability to convey narrative through landscape and figuration, possibly influenced by her deep appreciation for natural forces, as seen in her other works inspired by Georgian Bay and New England landscapes.
