Description of the item:
Beautiful oil painting on cardboard applied to a small panel, depicting a glimpse of a city, a small square in front of an old shop from the late 1800s, with various characters and a cart, in impressionist style, dating from the late 19th century or early 20th century, Neapolitan school, the painting is not signed but on the back there is a small tag attributing it to Vincenzo Caprile.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
From an internet search, we find that the twelve highest auction results for Vincenzo Caprile range from €24,000 to €105,000 plus auction fees. Our painting is slightly smaller and is not signed by the artist, but only attributed with a small tag on the back, so it is certainly worth less than the paintings given as examples. However, it should be noted that the artistic quality, style, colors, brushwork, and subjects portrayed are very similar. For all these reasons, we agree to attribute the authorship of this small work of art to the famous Vincenzo Caprile.
Final thoughts on the subject:
A beautiful, textured painting in the Impressionist style. Note the beauty of the various characters, the mother with the child on the left who stands out clearly from the rest, seeming to be ten meters ahead of the other subjects. The large bush at the top is beautiful, as is the strong summer sunlight of Naples that illuminates the entire open space, with glimpses of light on the walls and especially on the clothes hanging out to dry. Wonderful perspective from the mother with child on the left, then further ahead all the other characters and in the background the beautiful cottage with window and foliage, typical of the old Neapolitan villages. Excellent patina on the back, in line with the dating of the work.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Vincenzo Caprile (Naples, 1856-1936) was an Italian painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples with Domenico Morelli and Gabriele Smargiassi. An impressionist painter, he was linked to the Resìna School and devoted himself to depicting landscapes and popular characters. His painting technique is characterized by a great freshness of touch, reminiscent of Filippo Palizzi's influence, which led to his great commercial success. He lived in Venice for long periods, alternating between paintings of the lagoon and Neapolitan landscapes. Together with other Neapolitan painters (Luca Postiglione, Pietro Scoppetta, Vincenzo Volpe, Edoardo Matania, Attilio Pratella, Giuseppe Alberto Cocco, Giuseppe Casciaro, Giuseppe Chiarolanza, Gaetano Esposito, Vincenzo Migliaro, Vincenzo Irolli), he was called upon to decorate the rooms of the Caffè Gambrinus in Naples.
