A large abstract painting on canvas by amanda andersen; one in a series of five in the "following" series created … Read more A large abstract painting on canvas by amanda andersen; one in a series of five in the "following" series created in 2013. (three of them are available, two are sold.) this series was made with a linseed oil medium on the geometric parts of the canvas to create areas of semi-gloss transparency to contrast the larger matte surfaces. Black tape from a vhs cassette was draped in the studio and used as reference to create the abstracted black forms in the piece which elegantly stretch out and pile together in the middle. Background areas of pale pink, tan and beige let the black tape stand out, layered with pale yellow and yellow green rectangles.

this series belongs to a larger body of work created in the 2010s which explored vintage technologies and materials. Including still life paintings of vhs cassette tape–like this one–as well as reel-to-reel tape machines and other retro devices.

about the artist: amanda andersen has been working for over 10 years as a professional artist; working mostly in acrylic paint on canvas. Her work balances minimal compositions with bold, high-contrast patterns and vibrant colors, navigating a space between the abstract and figurative. Inspired by the rigid lines of agnes martin and organic forms of eva hesse, she also adores fantasy films, surrealism, brutalist architecture and a really smooth gradient. Her work has shown internationally, including: the kunstraum kreuzberg in berlin, tiny creatures in los angeles, the national centre for contemporary arts state museum in st petersburg.
