Known for her expressive use … Read more A bold and graphic oil on canvas by Dutch artist Mado Schoolmeesters (1933–2014), dated 1983. Known for her expressive use of form and texture, Schoolmeesters was an independent and experimental voice in the Dutch post-war art scene. Her work often explores the tension between structure and spontaneity, combining rich surface treatments with abstract motifs inspired by nature, textiles, and the human figure.

In this dynamic composition, cool grey and slate blue hues serve as a backdrop for striking red accents and a zebra-like striped pattern, creating rhythmic contrast and a strong vertical energy. The interplay of gestural brushwork and controlled line gives the painting both depth and a sense of motion.

Schoolmeesters studied at the Academie voor Industriële Vormgeving in Eindhoven and later at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht. Her work was exhibited widely throughout the Netherlands from the 1960s to the 2000s and is held in several public and private collections.
