author giovanni colmo was born in turin on may 13, 1867, and died there on april 24, 1947. He was one of the leading piedmontese landscape painters active in the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Despite an academic education in engineering, colmo chose to follow his own artistic inclination, training as a self-taught artist and finding inspiration in painting from life and the models of the rivara school. This school, active in the canavese and piedmontese alpine valleys, promoted open-air painting and truthful rendering of nature. Colmo took up their legacy, but he was able to develop a personal style, characterized by a refined use of light and a serene, lyrical vision of the landscape. His favorite subjects were the alpine valleys, pastures, forests and rural villages of piedmont, shot with great sensitivity to seasonal and atmospheric variations. He exhibited regularly at major art festivals in piedmont, particularly at the promotrice di belle arti in turin, gaining continuous appreciation from critics and collectors. His pictorial language always remained faithful to tradition, far from the experimentation of the twentieth-century avant-garde. It was precisely this stylistic consistency, combined with a profound knowledge of the alpine landscape, that earned him a stable place in the piedmontese art scene of the time.
