Here we have a marble stone antiquity legend, from the 1920s, of a foot carving in Carrara marble, purchased by the collector in Padua, Italy. The foot was sculpted in Florence, Italy. This is a sculpture study of the foot of the Roman God Mercury, or Hermes God for the Greeks, with the foot wearing a winged sandal. The sculptor is unknown. The collector was informed at the point of sale, that the sculptor was participating in a competition. The winner was to be awarded the opportunity to create a copy of the infamous David sculpture by his beloved Michaelangelo.
The sculptor invested his time and energy to create the Mercury foot sculpture as can be seen by the detailed attention to veins and bone structure on the winged sandal.
This sculpture of the sandaled foot belonging to Mercury, the god of commerce and goods, and the messenger of the gods known for his swiftness, symbolized by the wings on his sandal. The sculpture is a detailed representation of a sandal-clad foot, with the wing attached at the heel.
The winged foot is a recognizable symbol, often used to represent speed, agility and the ability to move between the mortal and divine realms. This sculpture hails from Rome, Italy.
