Bert Geer Phillips (1868–1956) — Watercolor Aspen Forest Path Scene painting
This atmospheric watercolor painting, by Bert Geer Phillips, depicts a serene forest scene marked by tall aspen trees in luminous autumnal yellow, contrasted with a central evergreen and a softly winding path. The trees form a natural archway, drawing the viewer’s gaze down the quiet path and into the heart of the composition. With its light-infused palette of yellows, greens, and earthy browns, the work exemplifies Phillips’ sensitive rendering of the natural world and his skillful use of watercolor to convey depth, air, and tranquility.

About the Artist
Bert Geer Phillips (1868–1956) was an American painter and one of the founding members of the Taos Society of Artists. Born in Hudson, New York, Phillips studied at the Art Students League in New York and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. His artistic path changed course in 1898 when a train journey led him unexpectedly to Taos, New Mexico—a place he would call home for the rest of his life.
Enchanted by the landscape and indigenous culture, Phillips became a pioneering figure in Southwestern art. His works often portray the landscapes, adobe architecture, and Pueblo life of the Taos region, using both oil and watercolor with a blend of Impressionistic brushwork and realist clarity. In 1912, he co-founded the Taos Society of Artists alongside Ernest Blumenschein and others, helping to elevate the region as a major American art center.
Phillips’ paintings are held in notable public and private collections, including the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos. His legacy endures as a central figure in the early 20th-century American art movement centered in New Mexico.
