Everything about this portrait denotes an aristocratic sitter. Enrobed in an off-white silken gown, the young lady is adorned by a string of pearls extending nearly to her waist. Since cultured pearls weren’t available until after 1900, each one of these beads was harvested from an unwilling oyster, harder to find as demand grew throughout the 19th century. Possession of such a necklace indicates that this fortunate girl was either from a noble family or one which had become immensely wealthy.
Why not invite her into your home to lend a little refinement to the ambiance?
