A finely matched four-piece Japanese porcelain tea and coffee service, produced in Arita during the Edo period, circa 1700. Created for the European export market, the set reflects the rich cross-cultural aesthetic of the time, marrying Japanese hand-painted artistry with Western-inspired forms.
Each piece is decorated in the Imari palette of cobalt blue, iron red, and gilt with green accents over a soft white ground. Stylized phoenix birds—symbols of longevity and rebirth—appear among blossoming peonies and scrolling foliage. The European forms, including domed lids, curled finials, and sculptural handles, were tailored for Dutch and English clientele in the 18th century.
The set includes:
• Coffee pot with scroll handle and phoenix motif
• Teapot with matching lid and floral reserves
• Lidded sugar bowl with double handles
• Creamer with molded spout and foliate handle
All pieces are unmarked, as expected for export porcelain of this period. The bases show minor kiln flaws and a faint bluish-white glaze characteristic of Arita ware.
