This 4x5 vintage Persian rug of Gabbeh craft is a truly special find of its provenance—one of few to enjoy a tasteful marriage of high-low pile texture to its geometry, as well as an exemplar of the archaic style—made with hand-knotted wool circa 1950-1960.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft will recognize many Gabbeh rugs like this piece are tribal rugs, or inspired by the nomadic weavers of several Persian cultures. This particular Persian Gabbeh enjoys flowers in a play of diamond medallions and all over style—the floral patterns embossed with a pattern celebrated by the Qashqai tribe, though a piece this bright and playful would be a unique find even among their works of weaving and folk art alike. Though this rug’s polychromatic colorway is among its many beauties, there are especially present tones of cream, peach pink, and salmon red in the deliciously saturated, impressive range of tones.
Keen eyes for detail will further admire that the background is woven from a Kilim, while the patterns in hand-knotted pile—a more contemporary element, surely signifying a progressive approach like few vintage Persian Gabbeh rugs, let alone most tribal carpets even of its mid-century provenance. One can’t help but admire how the marriage of a high-and-low texture to such graphic, arresting tribal motifs lends even more of a sense of presence and dimensionality than rugs of this bold, striking nature usually enjoy. Gabbehs represent one of the most archaic, time-honored weaving traditions in primitivist rugs and carpets, and this piece represents a profound marriage of modern attitude and classic beauty that actually exemplifies the old-world charm and boho chic they embody. It’s a whimsical, personal piece, yet quite comfortable in its choice of colors as well as versatile in its small size (offering vast design applications today).
Condition:
This vintage Persian Gabbeh rug further enjoys great condition for its age and origin—equally well-suited in size and sensibility to wall-hanging projects as flooring projects welcoming its beauty.
