A rare and iconic mid-century Murano glass sculpture figurine by Giorgio Ferro for AVEM (Arte Vetraria Muranese), Venice, circa 1952. Free-blown by hand using black and white canne (glass rods) with clear glass accents, the tall Murano figurine depicts a stylized musician holding a side drum, topped with a domed striped hat. Executed during Ferro’s design tenure at AVEM (1951–1955), the piece exemplifies the expressive modernism and technical innovation of early 1950s Murano artistry. This example is unsigned, as typical for works of this type.
Unsigned, this exact model is illustrated in Antiquariato, No. 474 (October 2020), p. 84, and discussed in the article “I colori di AVEM” by Chiara Pasqualetti Johnson. It appears on the issue’s cover and is widely recognized as a hallmark of AVEM’s mid-century modern elegance. While smaller AVEM figural works and animal forms from the 1950s occasionally surface, large-scale sculptural figures of this caliber and refinement are exceptionally scarce. At 16.75 inches tall and featured on the cover of Antiquariato, this example stands out as one of the most distinctive and substantial figural works attributed to Giorgio Ferro.
