A stunning and rare French gold box, likely created in Paris around 1790 and attributed to master goldsmith Louis Tassin.
This exquisite 18 karat piece bears the hallmark of Mercury’s head (denoting French guarantee for gold), along with a partially legible maker’s mark believed to be Tassin’s.
Hand-engraved in the Rococo style, possibly Louis XV period or early Louis XVI transition, the exterior shimmers with intricate turned patterns and richly sculpted cartouches. The lid and base are detailed with ornate scrolling and framed borders; the interior remains smooth and untouched, a beautiful contrast.
Originally used as a snuff box, vinaigrette, or pillbox, it's the perfect size to nestle into the palm and carries the quiet gravity of centuries past. The closure is nearly flush, occasionally it snaps tightly shut, other times it rests slightly ajar, a charming quirk of its age.
In excellent antique condition. A one-of-a-kind treasure, surely once owned by someone of distinction, and ready to be passed on to the next generation of collectors.
