The Brussels-based ébénist Jean Joseph Chapuis (1765-1864!!) is today considered – although unknown to many – one of the most important of his time in the Franco-Belgian-speaking world. His workshop, with its enormously productive staff, produced furnishings for numerous palaces, including the royal palace, the Chateau de Laeken. Today, he is credited with inventing the first largely laminated bentwood chair around 1805; a design of the century that marks the beginning of modern chair design and is thus also represented in important museums around the world, such as the Vitra Design Museum, the Neue Sammlung, the Metropolitan Museum, and others.
The piece presented here is made in the classic Empire style with four large, finely crafted caryatids made of fire-gilt bronze and mahogany. The demi-lune shape reduces the weight of the wide piece, yet still lends it an imposing appearance. The piece is in its preserved original condition. This piece has an attribution mark,
