the model was first presented at the “nya hem” exhibition in copenhagen in 1948, where finn juhl designed the entire bovirke exhibition space. Several other now-famous pieces of furniture were displayed in the same booth, including the 48 chair, the 46 sofa, and the eye table. Bovirke’s owner, poul h. Lund, was one of the first to recognize the potential for producing finn juhl’s expressive furniture on a larger scale for the modern home.

an interesting detail is that finn juhl was trained in architecture and described himself as a self-taught furniture designer. From the start, he dreamed of becoming an art historian, and his strong interest in art is clearly evident in the organic lines and sculptural expression of his furniture. A few years after this table was designed, he was also awarded the prestigious commission to furnish the trusteeship council chamber at the united nations headquarters in new york.

the table features a beautifully grained teak top and an elegant oak base. The legs are finished in teak, creating a refined contrast to the lighter oak while highlighting finn juhl’s knack for combining different types of wood.

the gently undulating edge is both a decorative and functional detail. The shape provides ample legroom while contributing to the table’s visual lightness.

the table comes with two extension leaves, each measuring 47.5 cm. Both leaves can be stored inside the table when not in use—an exceptionally practical and well-thought-out design. With both extension leaves in place, the table reaches a maximum length of 232 cm and can seat up to about ten people, depending on the width of the chairs.

the design was relaunched by house of finn juhl in 2019, more than 70 years after the table was first introduced—a fine testament to the model’s timeless form and function.
