Subject & Medium
Presenting an exceptional original oil on canvas titled Ware Hare Challenger, painted circa 1880 by esteemed British sporting artist James Albert Buchanan Jay. This commanding Victorian-era artwork captures the thrilling spirit of the English fox hunt—an iconic motif of the period—with technical brilliance and narrative finesse.
Executed in oil on canvas, the work is a true showcase of Jay’s refined academic training and deep immersion in rural sporting life. Verso, the original 1880 commissioned purchase price remains visible, adding to its provenance and historic value.
Composition & Technique
Set on the storied grounds of Norwood House, Beverley (Yorkshire), this painting encapsulates a dramatic moment of the chase. A huntsman, dressed in a vivid scarlet coat, surges forward on a powerful black steed, his Swaine Adeney riding crop mid-lash, his posture radiating determination and speed.
To the right, a dynamic pack of hounds bursts into view, animated and alert, each hound rendered with lifelike individuality—a hallmark of Jay’s keen observation of animal form and behavior.
In the middle ground, additional riders—some in red, others in traditional black—gather at a gate, forming a secondary focal point that adds narrative tension and compositional depth. The viewer’s eye is drawn from the vibrant green pasture into the shadowy woodland beyond.
Above, the sky is depicted in muted greys and slate blues, evoking early morning mist or the atmospheric hush of late afternoon. Subtle beams of light catch the sheen of the horses’ flanks and the folds of the riders’ coats, adding movement and texture.
Jay’s brushwork masterfully alternates between the expressive and the precise: loose, textured strokes depict the natural landscape, while the horses, hounds, and figures are rendered with academic clarity and anatomical accuracy. His palette is grounded and authentic—earthy greens, browns, and cool blues balanced against the commanding red of the huntsman’s jacket.
This is not merely a hunting scene—it is a master study of movement, light, and tradition, brought vividly to life through the eye of one of the 19th century’s most talented sporting artists.

About the Artist
James Albert Buchanan Jay (1838–1888) was a British painter acclaimed for his equestrian, sporting, and rural landscapes. Born into the landed gentry of Herefordshire, he was steeped in the world of country pursuits from a young age. Jay trained at the Royal Academy Schools and began his artistic journey as a children's book illustrator before turning to painting full-time.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy (notably in 1878 and 1880), the Walker Art Gallery, and regional shows. Later in life, Jay traveled to Germany and Australia, securing prestigious commissions from racing patrons. He passed away in Sydney in 1888.
His works are rare, highly sought after, and praised for their authenticity, vitality, and technical command. His best paintings can exceed $32,000 USD at auction. This particular piece, in our opinion, stands among his finest.
