English Lake District landscape oil painting by acclaimed British painter Clarence Henry Roe (British, 1850-1909), circa 1880. Wonderfully moody landscape of kill (stream) in dense wooded area in winter. High horizon with shifting clouds and water cascading over rocks brings brightness and adds depth and dimension. Brushwork is very fine and precise.

Clarence Henry Roe was an acclaimed British landscape painter. Born in Glasgow he was a pupil of the Royal Academy in London. Clarence Roe’s landscapes are wonderfully versatile often including rivers, lakes, lochs, mountains, fishermen, birds and animals. Roe’s rich color choices and precise brushwork reinforce the harmony between these works. Henry Roe is best known for his renderings of the Scottish Highlands and lochs. He was the son of Robert Henry Roe, also a landscape artist and Emma Bailey, the daughter of the sculptor of Nelson’s column. His two brothers, Colin Graeme and Robert Ernest, were also listed artists. Some Dictionaries state that Clarence was born in Glasgow and some that he was born in Birmingham. He is also given an address in London at Tottenham Court Road, although Professor Dennis Child, in his book Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales states that he spent most of his time living a Bohemian life in his studio in Yorkshire Like many other landscape painters, Clarence Roe used plein air studies of natural elements, such as a craggy boulder– to create idealized compositions.
