The elegant mythical mermaid handles and decorative gilt detailing are reminiscent of Grand Tour pieces popular in Europe in the late 19th Century. The urns are made up of two unattached pieces - ornately decorated tops resting on pedestaled bases. The two part design allowed them to be easier to import to New York but also allows them to easily be made into lamp bases if desired. The bases of each are hallmarked with the letter "N" inside the letter "C," which most likely indicates that the urns were produced for Lenwile Ardalt in "Occupied Japan" (referencing the period between 1945 - 1952 when Japan was under Allied occupation following the end of WWII).
