Weight of the sculpture: approximately 18.5 kg.
Description of the object:
Imposing bronze bust depicting a young naked woman, created and signed by the Neapolitan artist Vincenzo Gemito, with a green Alpi marble base. The woman depicted in profile is beautiful, reminiscent of women portrayed during the Fascist era, with an imperious and serious pose, typical of that period. The sculpture can be dated to around 1920, and the wonderful patina covering it confirms our dating. The woman's hair is gathered at the nape of her neck, a hairstyle that was very popular during the Fascist period. Her breasts are barely visible, and her shoulder raised upwards in front of her face gives the sculpture a particular air of pride. Note the beauty of the musculature visible on her back and her hair separated one strand at a time.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Vincenzo Gemito boasts numerous auction results and our research shows that the four highest results obtained by his sculptures range from over €47,000 to over €101,000, excluding auction fees of 25-30%, just to give an idea of the importance and value of this sculptor's works. We then found the same sculpture, without the marble base, entitled "Busto di Fanciulla Napoletana" (Bust of a Neapolitan Girl), sold at auction in 2021 by Sotheby's in the United Kingdom, lot number 112, for a total price of €10,328 including auction fees. Our sculpture is of the same size and artistic quality, but also has a very rare green alpine marble base, which undoubtedly increases its value.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
Vincenzo Gemito (Naples, 1852–1929) was an Italian sculptor, draftsman, and goldsmith. Largely self-taught and intolerant of academic conventions, Gemito trained himself by drawing inspiration from the alleys of Naples' historic center and the sculptures in the archaeological museum. Gemito's artistic output includes vigorous drawings, terracotta figures, and a large number of sculptures, mainly in bronze, all depicting Neapolitan folk subjects or scenes.
