Description of the item:
Fabulous cup and saucer in hard porcelain, entirely hand-decorated with floral motifs, produced by the famous German manufacturer Meissen in the first half of the 1800s. It bears the stamp of the Christie's auction of June 12, 2001, lot number 534/4.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
It should be noted that the Meissen mark, consisting of two crossed swords, is slightly different from the usual one. This is because, as well documented in one of the various volumes dedicated to Meissen manufacturing (see last photo), after 1824 there was a period, under the artistic direction of Von Oppel, in which the mark was made with a certain degree of carelessness, without always being the same. This period is known as the Daub Period (in German, Schmierzeit). All this clearly demonstrates that this is a 100% original piece.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
This piece was auctioned in 2001 by Christie's. The model of the cup is identical to that of the three cups with different decorations but the same shape, also taken from the same volume on Meissen porcelain (see last photo). The saucer is also very unusual, with a very high outer rim, and the thickness of the porcelain is much greater than usual, making it look more like a cup than a saucer. We all know the importance of Christie's auction house in London, perhaps second only to Sotheby's, also in London, and if an auction house of this caliber has taken the trouble to auction a single cup and saucer, you can well imagine its value. In our internet research, we finally found several Meissen cups similar to ours in decoration and shape, sold at auction or offered on various online art and antiques sales sites at prices ranging from a minimum of €300 to over €1,000, depending on the age and complexity of the decoration on the cup.
