The eames lar “cats cradle” armchair - why this name?
first of all:
lar: l for low, a for arm chair, r for on rod (r) (base).
why “cats cradle”? it's that game we played with rubber bands between our fingers, the game we used to play with as children! see those tangled rubber bands?
the lar chair is the same: the base of the legs is made of wire and is bent into shape to form two horizontal supports that connect to the floor, creating an almost triangular shape—like our rubber band game.
the lar “cats cradle” armchair is one of the five original fiberglass shell chair bases that were marketed from 1950 onward: the rar rocking chair, the dar eiffel chair, the dax with doweled legs, and the dax with four legs, and therefore also the lar.
this chair is unique in that it was primarily designed as a lounge chair: it's low and therefore perfect for low tables. It's fundamentally different from the other rar and lax lounge options. We can easily imagine that its design was a real contrast to the traditional, austere seating of the 1940s and 1950s.
the eames “cats cradle” chair never sold as many as the other variations, but it endured until herman miller discontinued its production in the mid-1960s.
the lar was unfortunately not resurrected as part of herman miller's reintroduction of the plastic chair series in 2001, but it was later revived with the fiberglass reissues.
this “cats cradle” arm chair has become one of the most sought-after models among collectors… they are in very good condition! it's your turn!

the 5 original fiberglass-shell chair frames from 1950 included the rocking rar, the eiffel dar, the daw with doweled legs and the four-legged dax, and therefore also the lar.
