designer jean rivier (tunis, 1915 - vallauris, 2017) was a french ceramicist and artist, a major figure in the vallauris ceramic scene after world war ii. He began his career as a watchmaker and jeweler, but in 1946 he turned to ceramics. In 1952 he moved to vallauris, where he met juliette derel, with whom he shared life and artistic activity until 1961. Their works, signed "j. & j. Rivier," combined traditional forms with abstract decorations inspired by modern art, often with patterns reminiscent of circuits and geometric structures. After separating from derel, rivier collaborated with claudie rigaud and expanded his artistic work to include mirrors, lamps and jewelry. He actively participated in local cultural life, exhibiting regularly and contributing to the promotion of visual arts in vallauris. His production is distinguished by the fusion of function and aesthetics, and his work is today appreciated as a significant example of 20th-century french art ceramics
