This memorial statue is an example of traditional African metalwork from the Benin Kingdom, present-day Nigeria, known for its historic bronze and brass sculptures made using the lost wax method.
The statue represents a leopard, which was considered the king of animals, and symbolized the power and connection of the king (Oba) with spiritual and natural forces. The statue is véry decorative and probably dates from the 1940s – 50s. In original condition with a patina that matches its age.
