New York-based Swid Powell was founded in 1982 by Nan Swid and Addie Powell, both of whom had worked at Knoll International. The company aimed to help architects realize their designs for the home. The collaboration with international architects and designers produced some of the most distinctive china and silver of the 1980s.
The series "Tuxedo" was designed around 1984 by New York-based firm Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, led by Charles Gwathmey (American, 1938–2009) and Robert H. Siegel (American, born 1939) and embodies the bold, architectural minimalism of the postmodern era. This set includes a lidded coffee pot and sugar bowl, and a creamer, all elevated on petite feet for a sculptural profile. Each piece is stamped on the underside: Swid Powell Gwathmey Siegel Tuxedo.
The discontinued Tuxedo pattern remains one of the company's most iconic and sought-after designs. This design is part of the permanent collections of many design museums, including the Museum of Modern Art and The Cooper Hewitt Collection in New York.
