This hand-colored, steel plate engraving entitled "France" by John Tallis, 1851, is a beautiful example of mid-19th century English mapmaking. Of particular interest are the exquisite vignettes depicting architectural, seascape, landscape, and figurative scenes from around France. The map details cities, regions, mountains, and waterways.
John Tallis operated as an engraver from 1838 to 1863, printing maps, atlases, landscapes & cityscapes, and even portraits.
A certificate of authenticity is pasted on the back of the frame.
