On the sides, the scene is framed by natural elements, such as tall, shady trees that serve as scenic backdrops. This compositional layout guides the viewer's gaze to the background, almost inviting him or her to "enter" the scene. Human figures animate the foreground, rich with contrasting vegetation and strong chiaroscuro effects. In the second plane, the river view opens up, dominated by ample light. The waterway winds gently through the landscape, accompanying the gaze. In the distance, a wide, airy view opens up, under a sky of pearly, rosy tones-typical of the Lorraine landscape. The grazing light suggests a time of day between late afternoon and dawn. The atmospheric perspective is rendered with great delicacy, and restores a sense of immense, almost spiritual remoteness. Although unsigned, the work clearly reveals the influence of Claude Lorrain, both in the spatial layout and in the poetic use of light. The present frame, though not coeval, is of fine workmanship, with rich, deep carving decoration. The well-preserved original gilding gives a luminous framing while properly highlighting the painting. General Condition: Very good condition. Provenance: France second half of the 17th century.
