Although Alfred Couturaud was renowned for his oil and canvas works his style certainly shows itself at its best on this painted, glazed cache pot.
The pot inscription “Les bords de la Vezere aux Eyzies” The banks of the river Vezere at Eyzies in the Dordogne, France.
These same views are still visible today, 119 years later.
We cannot ascertain if he was responsible for the actual fabrication of the ceramic work but it is without doubt the artistry is his.
There are oil and canvas paintings by Alfred Couturaud in existence but this is an extremely rare ceramic piece that he has put his name to.

Over time it has suffered some damage to two of its feet but has been professionally repaired using metal staples, this incredibly skilled manner of effecting repairs dates back hundreds of years and is an art-form in itself.


About the artist:
Alfred Couturaud (1864-1922) was an artist from the Charentes South West France, he engaged in religious orders from a very early age and went on to become an abbot. However from 1889 he devoted himself entirely to art in one form or another. He opened a gallery in Pontaillac, here he taught pure art. He remained active throughout his lifetime, painting landscapes and seascapes bursting with life.
