Bronze sculpture titled Sustraiak, by renowned Basque artist Paulino Larrañaga, dated 2001, signed and numbered 13 from a limited edition of 50. Originating in the Basque Country, in northern Spain, this work embodies the deep cultural roots of its region of origin. It features a triangular design with three symbolic faces: an industrial worker with a wrench and gear, representing industry; a woman with a child and a book, alluding to family and education; and a farmer with a hoe, symbolizing agriculture and the connection to the land. The word Sustraiak, engraved on the base, means "roots" in Basque, reinforcing the central message of identity and belonging. The piece rests on a solid marble base that contrasts with the green patina of the bronze, highlighting its sculptural strength and craftsmanship. This work is ideal for those seeking a contemporary sculpture with social content and Basque origins. Dimensions: 26 x 10 x 11 cm.
Monumental Version:
Inspired by this work, in 2006 Larrañaga created a monumental version of Sustraiak, installed on the banks of Axpe, in Astrabudua (Erandio). This patinated bronze sculpture, ten meters high and weighing more than three and a half tons, represents a fisherman, a worker, and a farmer, symbolizing the municipality's labor and cultural roots.
