Raphael Abecassis was born in Marrakesh, Morocco in 1953, lives in the South of Israel, where creates his vibrant and festive scenes of Jewish life. All his creations are Individual telling stories of culture religion and folk art of the Jewish people. His work is characterized by an original combination of colors as well as clear and perfect compositions. The calligraphic scripts, the verses from the bible sources, the illustrated prayers and Independence Charter of the State of Israel which constitute the entire body of Raphael's works in parchment, 3D cut outs and colors.
Abecassis is now a world-renowned Sephardic Israeli artist whose unique style combines Jewish symbols, Particularly from the Kabbalah, Sefardic motifs and modern composition into beautifully calibrated celebrations of color. In 1994, Abecassis designed what is now an artistic landmark in Los Angeles, California – the Sephardic Heritage Windows, a stained glass masterpiece Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel in Los Angeles. Abecassis claims his artistic mission is to paint like the old Jewish masters painted hundreds of years ago. He concentrates on biblically inspired art with themes drawn from the Kabbalah – Jewish mysticism. This direction became clear to him when, according to Jewish custom, he was to present his future wife with a ketubah, a traditional marriage document. Abecassis thought his document was too plain so he decorated it in exquisite detail. The ketubah was a big success and today he creates personalized ketubot for brides and grooms. The artist works in a variety of media including painting, Sculpture, serigraph, ceramic, tapestry embroidery, judaic ritual silver and stained glass windows. People love the artist's wonderful use of color and his whimsical style. Raphael Abecassis is a master of modern Jewish art.
​Jewish art continues to engage and attract Abecassis. His art is imbued with deep spiritual meaning and vibrant colorful imagery – seemingly dancing on the canvas. Abecassis brings to life the old technique of Decoupage. His technique transforms a conventional painting into a three-dimensional creating by lifting certain layers. Similar to Charles Fazzino and James Rizzi,l The artist cuts the layers, separates them manually and then plays with the layers of the work to create a sense of dimension and perspective.
Israel has had a Vibrant Folk Art, Naive art scene for a long time now beginning with the Bezalel school, artists like Israel Paldi, Nahum Guttman, Reuven Rubin had naive periods. The most well know of the strict naive artists are Shalom of Safed, David Sharir, Irene Awret, Gabriel Cohen, Natan Heber, Michael Falk and Kopel Gurwin.
